CHICAGO (January 17, 2017) — In its 32st year of honoring the nation’s best high school athletes, The Gatorade Company, today announced Riley James of Barnstable High School as its 2016-17 Gatorade Massachusetts Volleyball Player of the Year. James is the eighth Gatorade Massachusetts Volleyball Player of the Year to be chosen from Barnstable High School.
The award, which recognizes not only outstanding athletic excellence, but also high standards of academic achievement and exemplary character demonstrated on and off the field, distinguishes James as Massachusetts’s best high school volleyball player. Now a finalist for the prestigious Gatorade National Volleyball Player of the Year award to be announced in January, James joins an elite alumni association of state award-winners in 12 sports, including USA Volleyball players Kayla Banwarth (2006-07, Wahlert HS, Iowa), Alisha Glass (2005-06, Leland Public HS, Mich.), Jordan Larson (2004-05, Logan View HS, Neb.) and Foluke Akinradewo (2004-05, St. Thomas HS, Fla.).
The 5-foot-10 sophomore outside hitter led the Red Raiders to a 26-1 record and the Division 1 state championship this past season. James tallied 518 kills, 217 digs and 42 service aces while posting a kill percentage of .471 and a hitting percentage of .347. The Boston Globe Division 1 Player of the Year, James is a two-time Boston Globe and Boston Herald All-Scholastic. She concluded her sophomore year with 811 total kills in her prep volleyball career.
A member of the Spanish National Honor Society, James has volunteered locally with the Special Olympics and as a youth volleyball coach. “Riley makes the game look easy,” said Joe Reardon, head coach of Bishop Feehan High. “She is a complete player with a high volleyball IQ. She can attack from anywhere on the court and get the kill.”
James has maintained an A average in the classroom. She will begin her junior year of high school this fall.

Jul 31 – Aug 8, 2017, Departing from Boston, led by Paul Nimblett, MGVCA member and Norwood HS Volleyball Coach
Paul says: “I wanted to reach out to all the coaches in our organization. I have been picked by a program called AmericasTeam to coach a team this August to travel to Italy and compete against teams from over there, and travel around and learn about the culture and bond with other players. This great opportunity allows me to reach out and contact coaches about players that might be interested. I am in the process of putting the team together but I am looking for more Varsity caliber players that want to compete. If a coach has any players interested please have them contact me firstname.lastname@example.org
Congratulations to the Division 1, 2 & 3 MGVCA All State Teams and to Case, Hopkinton and Barnstable on their State Championships!
