Our member coaches met on November 4th to nominate and select the MGVCA All State Teams for this year at our annual coaches meeting in Franklin.
The MGVCA is a statewide organization for
high school coaches of girls volleyball. Begun in the 1970's,
this organization has annually held clinics, chosen a coaches
All State Team, and maintained an active presence regarding issues
which impact our sport. The primary goal of this organization
is to serve as a resource for its constituents, currently 217
in number. We generally meet twice per year (pre- and post-season)
in addition to our March clinic. Currently, we have one voting
member on the MIAA Volleyball Committee.

The MIAA continues to utilize current NCAA Women's Volleyball Rules in most instances. We would like to take a moment to highlight new volleyball rules that have been changed or modified recently as a result of the MIAA Rules Change process. The rule numbers and pages referenced are the current Association Rules for Volleyball play and are reflected in the July 1, 2007-June 30, 2009 MIAA Handbook.
Changes from past practice to be aware of are:
Page 77: 81.1.5 The NCAA rule regarding "pursuit" will be permitted, provided the venue had enough room. Any net system that incorporates wire or chain shall be deemed unsuitable for the pursuit rule, regardless of the amount of free space around them.
Page 77: 81.2 Junior varsity competitions will be two out of three games, played to 25 points utilizing rally scoring, with the third game played to 25 points, and will count toward the season and weekly schedule limit.
Page 78: 81.7 Boys playing on a girls team
81.7.1 It is a fault for a male player on a mixed gender girls' team to attack the ball at any time inside the 3 meter attack line if at contact, the ball is entirely above the top of the net.
81.7.2 Only female front row players are permitted to participate in a completed block.

Gatorade Player of the Year Program
The Gatorade Player of the Year award is viewed by many as the nation's most prestigious high school athletic award. Those who've followed its history also know it as a first look at young athletes likely to emerge as champions in the collegiate and professional arenas.
In each state and the District of Columbia, Gatorade Player of the Year winners are selected annually in football, volleyball, boys and girls soccer, boys and girls basketball, baseball, softball, and boys and girls track & field.
The male and female athletes who emerge from the review process as most outstanding are named Gatorade Athlete of the Year and presented their award at a ceremony on the afternoon prior to the ESPY Awards in July.

Long-Time Respected Volleyball Official Passes Away
Sam Colangelo passed away on Friday, 9/29/06 due to a battle with cancer. Sam had been the assignor of officials for the North Shore League and the Merrimack Valley Conference for many years. He recently retired from the Billerical School System, got remarried, and bought a home in Florida. It was in Florida that he was diagnosed with cancer. He moved back to Massachusetts some months ago to be with his family during this time.
A Funeral Mass will be held Tuesday at St. Theresa Church, 470 Boston Rd., Billerica at 9 AM. Relatives and friends respectfully invited. Visiting hours Monday at the Sweeney Memorial Funeral Home, 66 Concord Rd., BILLERICA 2-7 PM. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the BMHS Athletic Hall of Fame, c/o Billerica Municipal Employee Credit Union, 365 Boston Rd., Billerica 01821. |
