About Our 2007 Clinician
Since 1974, Joan Powell has virtually done it all when it comes to volleyball.
She has coached volleyball at Coronado High School for 32 years, appearing in 15 state tournaments. With over 500 career victories, including three State Championships, Joan is one of the most successful coaches in the history of Colorado interscholastic sports. Over thirty of her athletes have been awarded scholarships to continue their play at the collegiate level. She also has club experience as both a coach and director, and she has coached volleyball at the middle school level.
As an official, Joan has more than twenty years of experience as a USA Volleyball national official and more than thirty years of experience as a collegiate national official. She has officiated numerous NCAA semi-final and final matches, including the 2005 Final Four. She is currently serving her fourth term as president of PAVO (Professional Association of Volleyball Officials). Powell serves as an advisor to many rules making organizations ranging from NCAA to National Federation.
She has contributed to two books and one video series. Writing a chapter on Parent Relations in the popular She Can Coach, she also contributed a chapter on Digging in Volleyball Skills and Drills.
Powell was also featured in the video series Skills, Drills and Thrills (produced by USA Volleyball).
In addition to being named to the Colorado Springs Sports Hall of Fame, Powell has also been inducted into the Halls of Fame at the University of Arizona, the USA Volleyball Association and the Colorado Women’s Sports Foundation.
As a member of the USA Volleyball Board of Directors, she travels the country in educating both coaches and officials as part of the organization’s CAP cadre. Recently retired as a full-time teacher, Joan says her focus remains to give back to the sport that has been so good to her.
